Recently, actor and MP Kangana Ranaut shared a post claiming that "too much protein makes you dumb" while also expressing concerns about protein shakes and modern diets. The comments quickly sparked discussion among doctors and nutrition experts. 

What does science say? 

There is no scientific evidence that eating protein within recommended amounts reduces intelligence or cognitive function. 

In fact, protein provides amino acids that help produce neurotransmitters involved in normal brain function. It is also essential for: 

  • Muscle repair 
  • Hormone production 
  • Enzyme synthesis 
  • Immune function 
  • Healthy ageing 

Experts did agree with one part of the discussion: ultra-processed foods should not replace whole foods, and protein supplements should only be used when they help meet a genuine nutritional need. 

Why Protein Matters More Today Than Ever 

Many people say, 

"Our grandparents didn't worry about protein. Why should we?" 

It's a fair question. 

Years ago, life looked very different. People walked more, worked in physically demanding jobs, sat less and generally ate fewer ultra-processed foods. Daily movement was naturally built into life. 

Today's lifestyle is different. 

Many of us spend: 

  • 8 to 10 hours sitting 
  • Less time being physically active 
  • More time eating refined and convenience foods 
  • Less time doing manual work 

At the same time, obesity, type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease and age-related muscle loss are becoming increasingly common. 

Growing scientific evidence shows that adequate protein intake, combined with strength training and an overall balanced diet, supports muscle maintenance, healthy ageing, metabolic health and satiety. 

Are Indians Really Protein Deficient? 

One statistic often quoted is that 73% of Indians are protein deficient

This figure comes from national dietary surveys assessing protein intake and awareness. While it does not mean that 73% of Indians have clinical protein deficiency, it does indicate that many people consume less protein than recommended or have poor-quality protein intake

This is especially relevant for: 

  • Vegetarians 
  • Vegans 
  • Older adults 
  • Women 
  • People trying to lose weight 
  • Individuals recovering from illness 

At the same time, another group consumes far more protein than they need, often through multiple supplements because they believe "more is always better." 

Neither extreme is ideal. 

The goal is simply to meet your daily protein requirement consistently. 

How Much Protein Do We Actually Need? 

According to the ICMR-NIN Dietary Guidelines for Indians (2024), protein requirements vary depending on age, body weight and physiological status. 

For most healthy adults, a practical recommendation is around 0.8–1.0 g of protein per kilogram of body weight per day, while older adults, athletes, pregnant women and highly active individuals may require more based on their needs. 

The focus should be on meeting your requirement, not chasing unrealistic numbers seen on social media. 

The Biggest Protein Myths and the Real Science 

Myth 1: "Too Much Protein Makes You Dumb." 

Fact 

There is no scientific evidence that consuming recommended amounts of dietary protein harms brain function. 

Protein supplies amino acids that help produce neurotransmitters, enzymes and hormones that support normal brain function and overall health. 

Myth 2: High-Protein Diets Damage Healthy Kidneys. 

Fact 

This myth has existed for decades. 

Research consistently shows that higher protein intake does not damage healthy kidneys

However, people with chronic kidney disease may require protein restriction under medical supervision. 

For a healthy individual eating protein-rich foods at breakfast, lunch and dinner, exceeding harmful levels through normal foods is extremely unlikely. 

Myth 3: Protein Causes Cancer. 

Fact 

Protein itself does not cause cancer. 

This myth often arises because studies have linked high consumption of processed meats such as bacon, sausages, ham and salami with an increased risk of certain cancers, particularly colorectal cancer. However, this should not be confused with protein itself being harmful. 

The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies processed meat as a Group 1 carcinogen based on evidence that frequent consumption increases colorectal cancer risk. Red meat has been classified as "probably carcinogenic" (Group 2A), but this classification relates to the food and patterns of consumption, not to protein as a nutrient

Limiting processed meats and eating a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and Fibre is a much more evidence-based strategy for reducing cancer risk than restricting protein. 

Myth 4: Protein Powders Are Necessary. 

Fact 

Protein powders are supplements, not necessities. 

Most healthy adults can meet their protein needs through food. 

Supplements can be useful for athletes, older adults with poor appetite or people struggling to meet their needs through meals, but they should never replace a balanced diet. 

Myth 5: Eating More Protein Will Make Women Masculine. 

Fact 

This is one of the biggest misconceptions that prevents many women from eating enough protein. 

Protein does not increase testosterone levels or make women develop a masculine appearance. 

Muscle growth depends on several factors, including resistance training, hormones, genetics, total calorie intake and adequate recovery. 

Women naturally produce far lower levels of testosterone than men, making it physiologically impossible for normal protein intake alone to create a bulky or masculine physique. 

Instead, adequate protein helps women: 

  • Preserve lean muscle during weight loss. 
  • Support bone health. 
  • Improve recovery after exercise. 
  • Promote satiety. 
  • Support healthy ageing.

Every cell in the body depends on protein. 

Why Protein Matters for Vegetarians 

This is perhaps the group I worry about most. 

Many vegetarian diets are dominated by rice, chapati, poha, bread or biscuits, while protein-rich foods are consumed in relatively small portions. 

The good news is that improving protein intake doesn't always require supplements. 

Simple additions such as dal, paneer, soy foods, sprouts, roasted chana, curd and nuts can significantly improve protein intake. 

My Message After Nearly a Decade as a Clinical Dietitian 

The biggest mistake I see isn't people eating too much protein. 

It's people not knowing how much they actually need

Many women consume too little protein. 

Many older adults gradually lose muscle because protein intake declines with age. 

Some fitness enthusiasts spend heavily on supplements while overlooking sleep, exercise quality and balanced meals. 

Nutrition should never be driven by fear or social media trends. 

It should always be guided by evidence.

Protein is neither the villain nor a miracle nutrient. It is simply an essential part of a healthy diet. 

Whether you're a vegetarian, vegan, office worker, parent or athlete, the goal is straightforward: consume enough high-quality protein to meet your body's needs, prioritise whole-food sources whenever possible and question nutrition advice that lacks scientific evidence. 

Awareness, not extremes, is what will help India bridge its protein gap.
