Cheesecake Modak Recipe

|By Mantasha Inamdar

Modak is one of the most loved sweets prepared during Ganesh Chaturthi. Traditionally made with rice flour, coconut, jaggery and ghee, modaks are offered to Lord Ganesha and enjoyed with family during the festive celebrations.

This year, we gave the classic modak a delicious modern twist with a cheesecake-inspired filling.

Inspired by Simar from MasterChef, we tried recreating this trendy cheesecake modak and gave it a Prolicious touch by adding Prolicious Up It to the khoya and coconut filling. This helps increase the protein and fibre content while keeping the festive taste and texture intact.

Cheesecake and modak may sound like a crazy combination, but the result is surprisingly delicious. The soft rice flour covering, rich khoya filling, creamy cream cheese and tangy caramelized strawberry jelly come together beautifully in every bite.

Because festive food should be about celebration, enjoyment and sharing, with a few thoughtful nutrition upgrades along the way.

How to Make Cheesecake Modak

Step 1: Prepare the Rice Flour Dough

Mix rice flour, water, a pinch of salt and a little ghee to make a soft, smooth dough. Cover with a damp cloth and keep aside.

Step 2: Prepare the Cream Cheese

Take cream cheese in a bowl and mix gently until smooth and creamy. Keep aside.

Step 3: Prepare the Caramelized Strawberry Jelly

Cook chopped strawberries or strawberry jelly in a pan until soft and thick. Add a little jaggery if needed. Stir until jam-like, then switch off the flame and let it cool.

Step 4: Prepare the Protein-Rich Khoya and Coconut Filling

This is the section where we add the Prolicious upgrade.

Take a pan and add khoya.

Cook it gently for a few minutes on a low flame.

Add jaggery and mix well.

Now add desiccated coconut and combine everything properly.

Once the mixture starts coming together, add 2 Prolicious Up It.

Mix well so that the Up It is evenly incorporated into the khoya and coconut mixture.

Cook for another minute or two while stirring continuously.

The filling should become thick and easy to handle.

Switch off the flame and allow the mixture to cool slightly.

Your protein- and fibre-boosted khoya coconut filling is ready.

Step 5: Prepare the Modak Mould

Take a modak mould and lightly grease it with a little ghee.

Take a small portion of the rice flour dough and press it into the mould.

Spread the dough properly along the sides, leaving enough space in the centre for the filling.

Now begin layering the cheesecake-inspired filling.

Add the prepared khoya, jaggery, coconut and Prolicious Up It mixture as the first layer.

Add the khoya and coconut filling into the mould and press gently. Layer with cream cheese and caramelized strawberry jelly. Do not overfill.

Cover with another portion of rice flour dough and seal the edges properly. Carefully remove the modak from the mould and repeat with the remaining ingredients.

Step 7: Steam the Modaks

Place the prepared modaks in a steamer.

Steam them for approximately 10 minutes, or until the rice flour covering looks cooked and slightly glossy.

Once done, carefully remove the modaks from the steamer.

Allow them to cool for a few minutes before serving.

Your Cheesecake Modaks are ready!

Why Add Prolicious Up It?

Traditional modaks are delicious, but festive recipes can also be given a simple nutrition upgrade.

In this recipe, Prolicious Up It is added to the khoya and coconut filling.

It contributes protein and fibre while blending into the rich festive mixture. This makes the filling more nourishing without taking away from the taste and texture of the modak.

The combination of khoya, desiccated coconut, jaggery and Prolicious Up It creates a rich and satisfying filling that pairs beautifully with cream cheese and strawberry jelly.

Why This Cheesecake Fusion Works

At first, cheesecake and modak may sound like two completely different desserts.

But the combination works because each ingredient brings something special:

  • Rice flour dough: Gives the traditional soft modak covering.
  • Khoya and coconut: Adds richness and a familiar Indian festive flavour.
  • Cream cheese: Brings the creamy texture of cheesecake.
  • Caramelized strawberry jelly: Adds fruity sweetness and a slight tang.
  • Prolicious Up It: Adds a protein and fibre boost to the filling.

The result is a dessert that feels traditional on the outside but trendy and modern on the inside.

Tips for Perfect Cheesecake Modaks

Keep the Dough Soft

A soft dough is easier to mould and helps prevent cracks.

Do Not Overcook the Khoya

Cook the khoya mixture on a low flame and stir continuously to prevent sticking.

Cool the Filling Slightly

Allow the khoya and strawberry mixtures to cool before assembling the modaks.

Avoid Overfilling

Use a small amount of each layer so that the modak can be sealed properly.

Grease the Mould

A little ghee helps the modak release from the mould easily.

Steam Carefully

Steam for around 10 minutes and avoid over-steaming, as the outer covering may become too firm.

Balance the Sweetness

Khoya, jaggery and strawberry jelly all add sweetness. Adjust the jaggery according to your taste.
